Toast and Coffee

But first, a note:  I've seen the well thought out rebuttal comments on the Viso post.  There was some serious care and thought there, so I'll address those (valid) concerns in a separate post.  I'm not sure when (I work a 12 hour shift tomorrow), but I won't forget you!

Toast:


This whole wheat bread recipe calls for cumin.  Which, for some reason, makes it excellent with blackberry jam.

Coffee:


My doppio (two shots, no water, milk or sugar) over ice and Ian's soy douple latte.

A very simple, but great way to start the day.  Mostly, I wanted to post this in contrast to the excess that was our breakfast at New Deal Cafe and probe that we are mostly reasonable folks.

  6. Hey Peter, I went to the website you referred to and I have to say after all the reading and research I have done on nutrition, this guy is way off on most accounts. I did not see a lot of what he bases his information on, (I couldn't find it), but animal fat and animal protein are far to high on his list of things to eat. All data seems to point in the opposite direction, from what I have read anyway,. Legumes are really healthy and help bring LDLs down and Keep Blood pressure in check. I do agree with him in regards to coconut oil, it is metabolized in the body differently because it is a medium chain fatty acid. To me this sounds like a slightly improved Atkins Diet, which is not healthy according to all the data I have read. I have been eating Vegan for a little over a month and I feel really good, plus i have lost weight. Anyway , just thought I would share my viewpoint on this diet. Sorry for the lengthy comment. My bad!

  7. One more thing than I promise not to take up space. I forgot to mention that a interesting book and study done on vegetarian and Vegan diets is called the China Study, by a Dr. Campbel (I think is his name), and "Eat to Live" by Dr. Fuhrman.

  8. There's a lot of controversy about the China Study. Some people think the results are totally bogus, for a variety of reasons.

  9. On the paleo diet, the paleo guys contend there are significant differences from Atkins. Also, there seem to be claims that the main thing wrong with Atkins is the initial starving period, and maybe some issues with too much protein, and allegedly other than that it is healthful. I dunno.

    Part of the paleo guys' claim about fat, according to what I've been told, is that high LDL is a symptom of inflammation, and not a cause. They don't seem to believe that saturated fat will cause high LDL or CV disease in the absence of inflammatory factors that they claim to eliminate. It's somewhat plausible, since statins have been shown to improve CV health even when LDL levels do not change, presumably because of some anti-inflammatory action. (But I'm not persuaded about their LDL story.)

    Anyway, the paleo guys seem pretty extreme, but I have heard some first hand accounts of good results, so I wonder how much of it is valid.

  10. I think lengthy comments are good, I love thought provoking conversations, I just always feel guilty when it is me who is going on about something. I need to read more regarding the China report , I am really impressed with the book "Eat to Live" though.
